Granite
The original architectural stone.

A 100% natural igneous stone formed deep in the Earth over millions of years. Hard, heat-resistant, and visually unrepeatable — each slab carries its own pattern of feldspar, mica, and crystalline grain.

About the Material

A material that earns its weight.

Granite is what most clients imagine when they picture a high-end stone countertop — and for good reason. It has been the architectural reference standard for decades, and it earns that position. Quarried as massive slabs, granite is one of the hardest materials available for fabrication: heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and structurally stable in dimensions that few other stones can match.

What distinguishes granite is its variability. No two slabs are identical. Mineral composition produces an enormous range — from pale, evenly-grained whites and grays through honey golds, blacks, and dramatically veined patterns where the formation tells its own geological story. For an island, fireplace, or signature surface, granite delivers a piece that no manufacturer can replicate or repeat.

Granite is porous, which means it requires sealing. Properly sealed, it resists almost everything a kitchen throws at it. Unsealed, it will absorb oil and acidic spills. We seal every granite installation at template, after fabrication, and at install — and we provide the products and instructions for the homeowner to maintain that protection over time.

Where We Use It

Applications.

The applications where granite performs at its best.

01

Kitchen Islands & Counters

The classic application — granite handles daily kitchen use, hot pans, sharp knives, and acidic foods better than almost any other stone. Available in slab sizes that allow large uninterrupted runs.

02

Fireplace Surrounds

Mantel stones, hearth slabs, and full-face surrounds. Granite's heat resistance makes it the natural choice for the most thermally-demanding architectural surfaces.

03

Live-Edge & Chiseled Slabs

For organic, sculptural projects — irregular edges that follow the natural fracture of the stone. We have done islands where the edge is the focal point, not the surface.

04

Outdoor Kitchens

Granite is the most weather-resilient natural stone we work in. Properly sealed and installed, it performs across Central Oregon's freeze-thaw cycles in covered outdoor kitchen applications.

05

Bathroom Vanities

Vanity tops and integrated backsplashes. The mineral character of granite reads beautifully in bathroom lighting, and the durability handles cosmetic and cleaning spills.

06

Architectural Slab Features

Stair treads, thresholds, fireplace hearths, and one-of-one pieces. Granite's structural strength permits dimensions no engineered stone can match.

What to Expect

Strengths, trade-offs, and care.

We believe in helping you specify with full information.

Strengths

What granite does best
  • Heat-resistant — handles hot pans directly without damage
  • Extremely durable and scratch-resistant
  • Each slab is one of a kind — true visual uniqueness
  • Widest pattern and color range of any natural stone
  • Performs well in outdoor (covered) applications
  • Adds resale value and architectural permanence

Trade-offs

What to know going in
  • Porous — requires sealing at installation and every one to three years thereafter
  • Heavy — structural cabinetry and support are non-negotiable
  • Can chip on edges if struck hard, particularly with sharp profiles
  • Slab-to-slab matching is approximate, not exact (a feature, not a bug)
  • Higher initial cost than engineered alternatives
  • Difficult to remove cleanly if you ever want a different look

Care

Living with the surface
  • Daily — clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild soap and water
  • Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon juice, ammonia) which can break down the sealer
  • Reseal every one to three years depending on use — perform a water bead test to check
  • Blot spills (especially oil, wine, juice) promptly — even sealed granite benefits from quick cleanup
  • Use cutting boards (not for granite's sake — for your knives)
  • Annual deep clean recommended; we provide a care kit with each installation
